Nik Rivers' Top 5 Songs Of 2018

December 31, 2018

Well another year has come to an end.  I still can't believe that I am embarking on my 6th year here at Alternative Buffalo....Man, time DOES fly when you're having fun.  With that said, it's time for the obligatory year end lists, and I am not immune to coming up with one.   As the year comes to a close, I figured I would mix it up this time.  Instead of my usual "Top 5 Albums" of the year, I am going to narrow the scope a bit, as I present to you, my "Top 5 Songs of 2018"

5. Weezer - "Africa" -  If you told me when 2018 began, that a cover of one of the smoothest Yacht Rock jams ever, was going to be a #1 World Wide sensation, I would have said that the Buffalo Bills would have a better chance of winning the Super Bowl.  Well, we all know that the beloved Bills didn't make it to the Promised Land, but Weezer did, with their smooth cover of the 1981 Toto classic "Africa".  Plus, the video starred Weird Al....#Winning

4. Billie Eilish - "You Should See Me in A Crown" - This one kind of took me by surprise.  I was at Lollapalooza, and had heard all of the internet chatter about a 17 year old from Los Angeles that everyone was going to see perform.  I made my way to one of the secondary stages at Grant Park, and there must have been 40,000 people waiting for her to go on.  Then I saw Billie Eilish perform.  The crowd went B-A-N-A-N-A-S! It was an amazing performance, and I immediately went online to listen to her music, which led me to this one...

3. Manchester Orchestra - "The Gold" - I have been a fan of these guys for years.  When they first released their concept album, "A Black Mile to the Surface' I liked it, not loved it.  But as I got into the album more and more, I discovered the deep story that front man Andy Hull was telling.  "The Gold" quickly grew on me...and then when the band performed it at Kerfuffle, and you guys in the #AltFamily sang the chorus by yourselves like a choir of angels, it cemented its place in my top 5.

2. Lovelytheband - "Broken" -  The little band that could.  These guys popped onto my radar in the last half of 2017.  They performed at TKBC Night-3 as relative unknowns at the time....and then 2018 happened.  The band hit the road, and this track started to gain steam, so much so that it eventually became a #1 song.  The band performed all of the late night talk shows, award shows, and are ending things for the year, by playing in Times Square on New Year’s Eve.  Proud of these guys...

1. Rex Orange County - "Loving is Easy" - The return of the "Breezy".  It took a 21 year old from England, to bring back the "Yacht Rock" sound that I love.  My man took the US by storm, and when I finally saw him perform at a Lollapalooza after party, I knew that the Breeze was real.  It's sooooo smooth, how could it not be my #1 song of 2018.
