With the recent tragic fire in Paris, France at the Notre Dame Cathedral, I wanted to share my personal experience with the famous landmark. When I was 10 years old, I went on a family trip to Paris. In addition to visiting The Eiffel Tower, The Louvre, The Arc de Triumph and countless other historical sites, I also visited Notre Dame Cathedral. It was massive both inside and out, and the art work was was breathtaking. Its a memory I'll always cherish, especially now that it will have to be rebuilt.

I think as Americans, it can be hard to fully understand the significance of an 850 year old landmark, seeing as we are a country that is only 245 years old. The conflicts Notre Dame survived and successes it has seen are numerous and it makes me speechless to think that I visited the such a place. It gives me hope that in less than 24 hours, there have been hundreds of millions of dollars pledged to help rebuild it by wealthy French business owners as well as a commitment by the French government to rebuild. While it may never be the same, it can be rebuilt so that future generations can enjoy its beauty and mystique. I was also happy to find out that many of the priceless artifacts housed at Notre Dame had been moved for the renovation, thus saved. Maybe if I'm lucky, I'll get to see the rebuilt Notre Dame Cathedral in the future. I'm sure it will be a site to behold as it has been for centuries.
